Back in February, golf’s governing bodies published the Distance Insights Report (DIR) which concluded that longer distances, longer courses and playing longer tees are unsustainable for a healthy future of the game and needs to be addressed. Fast forward a few months and with professional golf now returning to our screens, it seems golf has started back where we left it.

As fitting in an 18-hole round mostly requires a day’s donation to golf, modern day hackers are often left trying to source their fix elsewhere.  The traditional singular club membership model is no longer the only route to the game and is frequently being benched by golfers in favour of the growing nomadic golf offerings more suitable to their 2020 lifestyles.  Golf is changing, and perhaps it is time the game evolved with alternative forms embraced.

Our #BackYardGolf competition was launched yesterday by our very own Sir Nick Faldo, encouraging budding course designers to send in their most creative hole designs from home.  You can be anywhere, from your living room or kitchen to the back garden (or yard!).Head to our Twitter feed to see Sir Nick’s example design, then great creative yourself with your own design, take a video of the walkthrough (or the flyover!) and send it in to @FaldoDesign on Twitter using #BackYardGolf.

It has been widely highlighted that golf is inherently suited to a society practicing social distancing and a return to the fairways could be sooner rather than later, with recent reports suggesting that golf could be amongst the few sporting activities that reopen ahead of others. Given the inevitability that distancing measures will continue even when restrictions ease, golf will find itself uniquely positioned to resume play and find some kind of normality.
